We Buy Houses in Massachusetts: Massachusetts is Not a Great State to Retire in?

A ranking of the best and worst states to retire in just came out… And Massachusetts did not fare too well.

The rankings were determined by looking at 5 different categories with a weighted average. The categories were Affordability with a 40% weighted average. Affordability examined the cost of living and taxes which are obviously crucial for retirees living on a fixed income.

Well Being was the second highest weighted category at 25%. This metric factored in areas like a sense of community and entertainment options.

Healthcare came in as the third highest weighted category at 20%. They looked at the quality, cost and access to health services.

Weather came in at the fourth weighted category at 10% and Crime came in as the 5th weighted category at 5%. Weather not only included annual temps, but also factored in natural disaster risks while Crime factored in Property and violent crimes.

It makes sense that so many homeowners that are looking to retire use We Buy Houses in Massachusetts with Massachusetts being ranked one of the worst places to retire in the United States. These homeowners that are retiring are most likely sitting on a boat load of equity and looking to cash out and head to a more affordable

Alaska was actually ranked as the worst state to retire in. They did not do too well in all of the categories with the exception of well-being. I have to say… There isn’t a shot in hell that I am moving to Alaska to retire so I am thinking that kind of makes sense.

After Alaska came New York, Washington at number 3, California at number 4, North Dakota at number 5 and then Massachusetts as the sixth worst state to retire in.

In the highest weighted category, Massachusetts ranked 48 out of the 50 for affordability. Living here, I have to say that I don’t really have a whole lot to argue on this one. Affordability in this state sucks. Hard stop. It sucks on everything from the cost of housing to taxes on that housing to the cost of food and services.

A little sidetrack here.. But it really makes the point on the affordability issue here in Massachusetts. The excise tax on cars. Do you know how much this drives me crazy? And for the Massachusetts for life folks… An excise tax on a car is not normal. Paying a yearly excise tax on a car that I paid a 6.25% sales tax on drives me up the freaking wall. I will spare you my thoughts on the absurdness of how high our property taxes are and how the 8 year window to keep points on your license is an enormous gift to insurance companies.

Ya, affordability here sucks.  But many wonder how We Buy Houses Fast Cash. The process is simple. We buy houses for cash in as-is condition. We can close in 30 days or less and will make the process as simple and carefree as possible. You can even leave behind all the items that you don’t want and we will take care of it.

We were ranked #8 for well being. I think this one makes a lot of sense. There is a lot to do here in Massachusetts if you want to do it. From skiing in the winter to enjoy the beaches to the summer to enjoying the arts of the big and historic city of Boston. From a well-being perspective, this state has a lot going for it.

The Healthcare ranking shocked me. I mean… We have some of the best hospitals in the country in Boston. I mean… MGH, Brigham, Children’s, Tufts and Beth Israel! If I was sick or if I needed major surgery then there are few other places I would rather be. Not sure if this negative ranking could revolve around the cost. An area where I know we struggle though is on availability and timelines to get into seeing a specialist. It took about 6 months for me to get in to see a dermatologist. In Florida, my mother in-law was in a dermatologist office within a week!

I guess I get the ranking, but am still just very surprised.

For Weather we ranked number 31. Ya, again. I get this one. I mean, I guess if you like the cold weather then you would disagree… But the people who like the cold over warm sunshine are few and far between. Personally, I am on team sun. You can read the envy in my face as my in-laws pack their car for Florida in November.

And a ranking of 10 on crime I think makes a lot of sense. I know there are some rough areas. I know there are areas that are less safe, but for the most part… I think Massachusetts does a great job from a crime perspective.

Keep in mind that we buy houses all throughout Massachusetts. We Buy houses in Brockton to Boston to Lowell. We Buy houses in Quincy MA to Fitchburg… You get the point, we buy houses throughout the entire state of Massachusetts.
